Piaggio" Prof.ssa Arti Ahluwalia Investigation of cell, tissue and organ morphology and microstructure through image processing and 3D reconstruction Integration of a fluidic system with an imaging platform: real time monitoring of fluid dynamics and cell morphology Preliminary tests were performed to assess the feasibility to integrate a fluidic system (LiveBox1) with an imaging platform (Cell-IQ system, developed by CM-Technologies, Tampere, Finland). Automatica, Robotica e Bioingegneria Gian Maria Gasparri Research Center E. Piaggio Antonio Bicchi Study, modeling and stability control on biped robots in cyclic motion as Walking, Hopping and Running Walking: from modelling to control strategies Locomotion in Humanoid Robotics is a multidisciplinar field which proposes an interesting challenge in each space that it touches. In literature a huge number of different combinations can be observed considering: modelling, actuation, collisions management and control strategies. A set of flexible tools to implement the necessary scenario for locomotion is then needed. With this purpose, a library for a generic contact model is implemented considering a classical structure composed by springs and dampers. Then, a library to calculate the dynamic and other useful quantities for a robot with tree structure is presented. In the final part three strategies to control the quantities commonly used in locomotion are implemented, and their application and results are shown. Poster Gian Maria Gasparri 
Ingegneria Chimica II Gianni Orsi Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile ed Industriale Giovanni Vozzi, Roberto Mauri Study, development and realization of microfluidic devices able to generate nonlinear concentration gradients.  Application of a New 3D Concentration Gradient Bioreactor: Building Matrixes with a 3D Gradient of Mechanical Properties  Molecular gradients play an important role in physiological and pathological phenomena such as immune response, wound healing, embryogenesis and cancer. In recent years different microfluidic platforms able to reproduce important aspects of cellular microenvironments, to allow quantitative and reproducible characterization of cellular response to gradients have been developed. Microfluidics- based gradient makers allow the enhancing our understanding of fundamental biological processes, due to their high efficiency for analysis of cell behaviour in two-dimensional environments. These systems have the ability to generate large concentration gradients in just few millimetres, then dose– response curves could be easily obtained with a single experiment and using just a single cell culture. Toxicity tests could be easily implemented with this kind of system, giving the possibility to run a single ‘‘one-shot” test instead of the classical protocols, that are usually based on a multi concentration set of experiments. The core of this PhD program is to study, to develop and to realize an integrated engineered device able to generate an exponential concentration gradient in a cell culture chamber. It is important that this concentration gradient is exponential because his behaviour mimics the classical toxicity tests that are normally performed in several companies (pharmacological, environmental, chemical and so on). Poster Orsi

Razionale Adaptable Surfaces Adaptable Surfaces for the Grasping of Complex Objects Second year research activities are the prosecution of themes studied during the first year of the PhD. The RobLog project has been one of the main subjects of the research activity. The candidate studied and designed a gripper suitable for the fourth milestone of the project. Moreover, adaptable surfaces, underactuated grippers and gripping principles have been studied during the past year. One important result is the study and design of a pneumatic hand using the jamming technology. Another point of interest is the development of the basis for an expert system for the selection of grippers. Poster Tilli

The discovery and safeguard of underwater archaeological sites is an important task for the Culture Institutions. Underwater Vehicles equipped with multi-sensor platforms, provide multiple descriptions of the sensed environment and can be exploited for scene understanding purposes. Automatica, Robotica e Bioingegneria Mario Olivari Dipartimento Ingegneria dell'Informazione, Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics Lorenzo Pollini, Frank Nieuwenhuizen Human-Centered Design of Haptic Aids Multi-loop identification methods to estimate pilot dynamic responses. Identification of pilot responses with different haptic aids and automated systems.  Haptic aids have been largely used in manual control tasks to complement the visual information through the sense of touch. To analytically design the haptic aid, adequate knowledge is needed about how pilots adapt their visual response and the biomechanical properties of their arm to a generic haptic aid. Two novel identification methods were proposed to estimate the pilot dynamic responses. The two methods were applied to experimental data from closed-loop control tasks with pilots, with the aim of estimating the pilot responses to different external aids. Different haptic aids were designed and tested during the experiments: a Direct Haptic Aid (DHA) and an Indirect Haptic Aid (IHA). Furthermore, an automated system was designed to be equivalent to the haptic aids when the pilot was out-of-the-loop, i.e., to provide the same control command as the haptic aid. The first regards to build a solid tunable lenses based on dielectric elastomeric actuator with a bioinspired design architecture. Automatica, Robotica e Bioingegneria II Mirko Ferrati Centro di Ricerca "E.Piaggio" Lucia Pallottino Time-Space Distributed Agents Coordination  We propose a novel approach for distributed traffic management of a group of mobile collaborative vehicles, moving within a shared environment. Our approach is based on a graph representation of the space-time where the robotic vehicles operate. Robots can exchange accurate predictions on their planned routes and speeds, in order to reduce energy consumption due to brakings and accelerations. Poster Mirko Ferrati 
Automatica, Robotica e Bioingegneria Monica Betta  Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione Alberto Landi Analysis of biomedical signals during sleep with application on a metabolic chamber Automated methods for REM sleep analysis An automated procedure specific for REM sleep analysis was developed, able both to detect and characterize Rapid Eye Movements (REMs), typical of this sleep stage, and to remove the artifacts they generate on the corresponding EEG signals. The procedure, based mainly on adaptive filtering and wavelet transform, was validated using artificial REM recordings and showed elevate performance. In particular the proposed integration between the stage of detection and artifact removal allowed an enhanced accuracy in the recovering of true EEG signals, compared to adaptive filtering only. Finally, the automated procedure was applied to real REM sleep data. This allowed an estimation of the actual distortion induce by REMs on EEG signals, that represent useful information for the interpretation of REM EEG quantitative studies. In fact, until now, the presence of ocular artifacs has seriously limited the studies on REM brain activity. Under these conditions the proposed automated procedure would represent a valuable tool in both clinical and research activities. In the future research activity the automated methods proposed will be used as preliminary signal processing steps for the study of functional connectivity during REM sleep. Poster_Betta.pdf

Automatica, Robotica e Bioingegneria Stefano Geluardi Dipartimento Ingegneria dell'Informazione, Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics Lorenzo Pollini, Frank Nieuwenhuizen AUGMENTED SYSTEMS FOR PERSONAL AIR VEHICLES Data collection and system identification of a light helicopter in hover Congestion problems in the transportation system have led to regulators considering implementing drastic changes in methods of transportation for the general public. A possible solution would be to combine the best of ground-based and air-based transportation and produce a personal air transport system. This project aims to investigate the interaction between a pilot with limited flying skills and augmented vehicles, that are part of the personal air transport system, and to verify if it is possible to reach similar performance to a highly-trained pilot, also in dangerous environmental or demanding conditions. Poster_Geluardi.pdf
